I am a student of ANDC, Biomedical Science, 2nd year. I need information about professors at Delhi University to whom I can apply for SUMMER TRAINING. In our course it is mandatory to do a research project in our final year, which we do in the vacation months of may, june, july(2009).
Courses undertaken as a part of the B.Sc. (H) Biomedical Science curriculum (till present-2nd Year) include:
1st year: Human Physiology, Biochemistry, Cell biology, Pharmacy & Pharmaceuticals, Biophysics
2nd year: Microbiology, Human Genetics, Pathology, Biostatistics, Medicinal Chemistry.
My areas of interest include Genetics, cell biology, microbiology, biophysics and biochemistry.
The main motive of our doing a research project in a well established lab is to learn the basic tools and techniques employed in the laboratories, so as to sharpen our practical skills for future research and studies.
It would be helpful if i get contact info/e-mail id of professors concerned.

You have indeed chosen a queer username Vandana Wink

As regards your query I have been working for past few days on a mode to address to your (and other similar students) query.
I am planning to hold some telephonic interviews with several faculty members and scientists i know. I shall record their answers and post the links to the audio files here, after hosting them on the DU webserver. I think it will adress to your need to a limited extent. Then we shall hold sessions in CSEC in which we shall invite all such students and some interested faculty members for face to face interaction. Hopefully that should facilitate.

Anyway no such attempts can be as useful as your direct interaction with some scientists say in IGIB or IICB the institutions i have some experience working in i have posted my experience in these two institutions. I am planning to post similar experiences for National Institute of Immunology and Indian Institute of Science in near future Smile

thankyou sir for the information..i shall certainly work upon your advice.
Actually last year few of my classmates had met with professors at north campus and Dr. Sudeshna Mukherjee had agreed on taking up two students in her lab for year2009,summer project.
it would be helpful if you could get me her e-mail id, since it is not available in the DU site also.
Regarding the username..the site wouldnt accept my true name so i had to try all sorts of permutations and combinations with fullstops and commas.!! Very Happy

Here's a very interesting summer training opportunity for BMS students:

OSDD website wrote:
Can students contribute?
Yes. The contributors can be graduate or post-graduate students, who have a passion to solve a problem and contribute to the drug discovery process.

Is monetary contribution possible?
Yes, monetary contributions are possible. But conditions apply. Please contact the OSDD Helpdesk for more details.

Do I need to have special training or expertise in any research area before I may contribute?
The answer is both ‘yes’ and ‘no’. Your ability to contribute meaningfully is more or less decided by the type of challenge posted. If your skills and expertise match those that would be required to successfully solve the problem(s ), we would be delighted to have you onboard. Keep your eyes open for the requirements that will be regularly posted online on the OSDD website.

How will my contribution be acknowledged or rewarded?
Once the peer-review acknowledges the successful solving of a problem , the contributors would get rewards in the form of Credit Points. Also, appropriate prizes will be announced for the best solutions. Each activity or a defined problem will have a pre-determined set of points associated to it. Further all probable prospective activity would also be given prior rating in terms of weightage. For example, Lead optimization would have higher weightage than Protein expression. The points can be accrued over time for all the contributions to the project.

Can I contribute my M.Sc or Ph.D thesis/ presentations?
You are welcome to contribute your presentation/thesis or any other document at Tbprints, provided you hold the copyright of the document and your action(s) are not in conflict with the policies of your organization. Please read the Terms and Conditions carefully.

Can I work from home?
Yes. As part of an on-line community, you may work from anywhere in the world at a time that suits you.

Will I be paid if I contribute?
Not all contributions are remunerated in money. The payment to contributions is decided on a case-to-case basis. It is dependent on the complexity of the problem/challenge and is decided upon by the OSDD review committee.

Who will judge my contribution? What is the process?
Each contribution will be tracked and attributed. The contribution may be judged either by the community or by the reviewers.

Can I join OSDD as part of my Summer training programme?
Certainly. OSDD maintains a page for summer projects related to OSDD.
Students who contribute to OSDD as a part of their projects will get Certificates depending on their contribution. Students are advised to contact the PIs on the website. They may work and report online. The project will be evaluated and certificates provided as per recommendations of a review committee.

That indeed reminded me of a post of one of the BMS students in this forum about two years ago Smile To illustrate my point i quote it here:

Seven eight years is indeed a very small time frame to say about the efficacy of any undergraduate program considering the fact that it takes at least five years to get a postgraduate degree, and I am not very sure if DU offers a MSc program too. In addition usually a research fellow takes at least a couple of years to demonstrate his/her mettlel. Getting an admission into a prestigious institution doesn't mean much, because many a Professors in these institutions need 'Gurkhas' to serve their personal ambitions!

You are quite right there, but the sheer no. of students securing admission into top institutes (with top ranks as well !) certainly proves a point, at least I think so ! Smile

Also, I would like to tell that, quite a no. of our seniors are publishing papers in journals of international repute like Journal of Neuroscience; Surprised
and many have proven their mettle already by completing their PhD and are now posted in int. acclaimed companies or are doing their Post-doc. Exclamation

Further, the BMS people have been getting various scholarships like IAS, JNCASR etc. quite regularly now. Very Happy

The D.U. also runs a M.Sc. Biomedical Sciences ( in A.C.B.R., North Campus) which has been runing successfully for quite many years now!

So, it may be relatively new, but certainly it is much more advanced than others in certain aspects!

Don't you think so?

If not, then think again Exclamation Wink

I would like to reiterate my point. Many Professors indeed take UG students to act somewhat like "gurkhas" in their laboratories. While one may argue that is indeed a part of education as is often argued about the practice of ragging freshers. But, still sometimes it can leave scars on the psyche of young. So, I would like to know of the feedback mechanism in the colleges from these students going to these elite institutions. For example, did it really helped to inspire them to consider taking up research as a career ?

A very rewarding possibility can be OSDD, as a student of ANDC has demonstrated. For details click on the following link Smile
